More about planning your tattoo
Bring your reference to the free consultation, even if it is rough. The consultation page asks you to point out what you actually like in each image.
In our custom tattoo gallery, look at the color cartoon coyote photograph. A black and grey broken clock with gears sits on a shoulder; the lighthouse and waves example is on an upper arm. Save the photograph you mean and point out what caught your eye. Our custom process explains that the artist redraws the reference around the spot you choose. When browsing the artist portfolios, look for the kind of subject and style you want discussed at your consultation.
For a smaller piece, the small and minimalist gallery shows a black and grey rose behind an ear, a rain cloud with a sun, and a pink cosmos in color. Bring the image you like and show where you want yours placed.
Names and dates need the finished wording as well as a picture. Our lettering checklist asks for the text written exactly as you want it, including accents or characters that might be mistaken. Bring it on paper or your phone. For the font reference, that page recommends an example already tattooed on skin. You and the artist read the stencil together; that is the point to catch a spelling error or change a date.
The sleeve gallery includes Las Vegas work with a sign, cards and dice. Another photo shows two full arms, with an armored figure and cross on one, a gate, dove and roses on the other. Use those views to explain which subjects belong in your plan and how much of your arm you are discussing. Existing tattoos belong in that conversation too. The sleeve FAQ says the artist can discuss connecting old work into the flow or a cover-up where needed.
For the free consultation, wear something that lets the artist see the area. If you are adding to or covering an older tattoo, show the actual piece in person. The consultation page asks for reference images and explains that size and placement are worked through with the artist. Your quote is for that design.
